Aerial Lyra at VGF
Come join us Sundays starting April 28 at 5:30pm for Aerial Hoops. Aerial Lyra (also known as Hoop or Cerceau) is a large steel hoop, suspended from the ceiling on which you can perform aerial acrobatics! During your VGF Hoop class, we will cover a variety of techniques to approach the hoop. This will include getting onto the apparatus, creating shapes and poses and moving within it. The class will begin with a thorough warm up and be completed with a cool down. During the sessions we will also cover various conditioning exercises, some ground based and others incorporating the aerial equipment, which will allow students to further their strength and stamina. We advise students to wear suitable clothing for the aerial hoop classes. It is important to have skin covered and suggest wearing several layers. It is also safer to wear more fitted clothing so that it does not get caught whilst on the hoop. Leggings, tights, t- shirts and leotards are all suitable.

Aerial Yoga

What is Aerial Yoga?

This amazing class is a fusion of several fitness modalities including dance, pilates, gymnastics, calisthenics, and yoga. The technique offers a full body workout with levitating meditations and zero compression inversions realigning the body’s posture from the compression of gravity using a hammock.

You will find yourself three feet off the ground in beautifully postured yoga poses. The hammock acts as a safe trapeze and it is utilized to change one’s dynamic relationship to the ground, allowing the participant to better understand their body and its relationship to the universe through physics. You will gain flexibility, muscular tone and improved cardiovascular health as you increase joint mobility while decompressing the vertebrae of the spine.

In addition to receiving a full body workout, this class emphasizes having fun while improving your overall body strength.

Benefits of Aerial Yoga

The benefit of inversions in yoga has been known for years. Inversions help stimulate and refresh the various systems of the body. The circulatory, endocrine and digestive systems are all affected.

However, standing on one's head requires a certain advanced level of fitness, as well as core and upper body strength to avoid compression on delicate vertebrae of the cervical spine known as the neck.

By hanging the body upside down from the hip joint in the yoga hammock, the body experiences a zero-compression inversion. The spine will decompress resulting in hydration of the disks, and re-alignment of the spinal cord while refreshing all body systems.

Over-all Benefits:

  • Experiencing an entirely new dimension to your yoga practice and fitness routine.
  • Decompressing the spine while re-aligning the vertebrae – relieving pressure by creating SPACE.
  • Re-mobilizing tight joints through gyro kinetic action – resulting in increased flexibility and mobility.
  • Improving strength while toning muscles.
  • Refreshing the systems of the body, releasing hormones and revitalizing the spirit.
  • The ability to get into advanced yoga inversions without creating spinal compression.
  • Holding challenging yoga poses longer and with correct alignment.
  • Increasing range of motion with less stress and pain.
  • Creating better body, mind, spirit awareness while increasing overall agility.
  • Enhancing self confidence while creating new neural pathways of joyful expression.
  • An increase of brain activity allowing for a clear mind and improved function – later.
  • Inversion acts like the foundation of youth – restoring a more youthful appearance.
  • Anti-gravity poses release oxygen and nutrients to the brain that penetrate through the skin and scalp. It’s a natural cleanser that is believed to enhance skin elasticity and hair growth.

What you can expect in an aerial yoga class?
Certified instructors expertly guide participants through basic progressions that lead to spinal decompression. Classes include low impact cardio, strength and flexibility training, balance, agility exercises, and inversions. Classes are open to students of all fitness levels.

Basic fitness and previous experience in movement forms such as yoga, dance, martial arts or sports will be helpful but not necessary.
